Meet the Stylist: Cameron Ryan

March 3, 2015

Introduce yourself!

My name is Cameron Ryan. I am a Senior Stylist at SalonCapri’s Newbury Street location.

How many years have you been a part of the SalonCapri team?

I will be celebrating 2 years as a hairstylist at SalonCapri this May!

Where did you study previously?

I attended Trip County Vocational High School’s Post Graduate Cosmetology program in Franklin, MA.

What do you specialize in (e.g., hair color, long hair, etc.)?

I consider myself a generalist, with extensive experience in both color and cutting under my belt, but my specialty is Balayage and corrective color.

What inspired you to become a stylist?

My inspiration for becoming a stylist came from watching both my mother and grandmother struggle with the limited wig styles available to them while they were undergoing treatment for breast cancer. I was also inspired to choose a career path that offers a different challenge every day and that continually encourages me to learn and grow in my field.

Which favorite hair care product has been in constant rotation for you behind the chair?

My favorite hair products are Kérastase’s Elixir Ultime and Nutritive Nectar Thermique as well as Shu Uemura’s Tasai Versatile Styling Cream.

Which celeb haircut and/or color are you loving right now and why?

I’m loving the versatility and softness that Robin Wright’s haircut has right now. Her layered, cropped cut has a clean aesthetic, simple lines and the soft fringe gives it a modern twist. Cropped cuts on women have a history of being labeled “butch” or “boyish” but her look shows that short hair on women can look effortlessly feminine and chic!

What are your favorite hair colors or style trends right now?

Right now, I’m loving the more natural Balayage looks – the soft, natural attitude of the technique mirrors my work philosophy! I’ve also noticed that quite a few fashion forward women in Boston are taking their hair length shorter to collar bone length!  It’s a great hairstyle choice as the length offers the playful swing and versatility of styling it with texture for a more fun, beachy look, or going smooth and sleek for a more clean-cut vibe.

What advice would you give a client who wants to try something new or different with their hair?

I would ask the client to be honest about their daily styling routine. How much maintenance are they willing to put into their new style? Usually, based on their answers, I’ll work within those perimeters to provide the client with a new style that works for their current lifestyle. I am also a believer of trying something daring at least once – It’s just hair, it’ll grow back!

What hair products should everyone have in their arsenal at home?

First and foremost, a great shampoo and conditioner! I love the Bain Satin line from Kérastase for daily, lightweight, moisture (which is something that everyone needs!). For styling and heat protection, I love Kérastase’s Elixir Ultime and Nectar Thermique and I also like pairing Shu Uemura’s Tasai Versatile Styling Cream with a small amount of Extreme Urishi Fixing Sap for long thick hair. For fine hair, I recommend combining Shu Uemura’s Ample Angora Volumizing Mousse with a light coat of their Sheer Lacquer Micro Fine Finishing Mist.
