My name is Marisa Camarra and I’m from Medford, MA. I’m a stylist at SalonCapri’s Newbury St. location.
How many years have you been a part of the SalonCapri team?
I’ve been in the industry for nine years, but I’m excited that this is my first year at SalonCapri!
Where did you study previously?
I received a bachelor’s degree before deciding to continue my education years later at Empire Cosmetology School in Boston. I spent many years at a Newbury Street salon where I completed my apprenticeship and was a stylist there for six years before joining the SalonCapri family.
What do you specialize in?
I specialize in cuts and color. For color, I love to do foil and balayage work, but I prefer balayage. I studied art and spent a great part of my life painting, so it blows my mind that I’m now painting hair!
What inspired you to become a stylist?
My very own hair stylist at the time was my biggest inspiration. Making people look good and feel good every day – I thought she had the coolest job in the world!
Which favorite hair care product has been in constant rotation for you behind the chair?
My favorite hair care product is any one of the Kérastase leave-ins, for example Nectar Thermique. Leave-in conditioners hydrate and protect hair without weighing it down.
Which celeb haircut and/or color are you loving right now and why?
Truthfully, I’m more inspired by places and travel than I am by celebrities. I love absorbing the vibe of a city and seeing how differently women and men carry themselves in each place. I thought the coolest looking people were in New York until I visited L.A. I was stunned by all of the effortlessly cool hair and really understood why we work so hard to recreate those beautiful, sun-kissed highlights and beach waves on the East Coast! I also love European cities because you can see a great mix of avant-garde as well as classic, continental looks. When I walk down a street in Rome or Paris and start to imagine the people that pass by me stepping off the pages of a magazine, that’s really what I love and what inspires me – seeing what is chic on the street and in real life.
What are your favorite hair colors or style trends right now?
A hair trend can last as long as a decade, so for me my favorite has been balayage highlighting – and I know it will continue to be for a very long time. For soft, natural looking dimension and a subtle grow out there is no better highlighting method. I love anything that is relevant and beautiful at the same time. I also love the long bob trend. It’s modern and sexy – and refreshing to see women liberated from super long hair!
What advice would you give a client who wants to try something new or different with their hair?
I generally like to keep people in their comfort zone, so I rarely suggest something dramatic. It also depends on their lifestyle and sometimes just a simple change can make a big difference. For cuts, maybe it’s to offer a style that is a bit more current, or simply more flattering in a subtle way – like growing or cutting the fringe, changing the part, adding more layers, etc. In terms of color, I may suggest a few highlights for dimension or a demi-permanent gloss to enhance or alter the tone, which can easily provide a change without the long-term commitment.
What hair products should everyone have in their arsenal at home?
Starting with a shampoo and conditioner that fit the needs of your hair type definitely makes a big difference. I like Kérastase Fluidealiste shampoo to tackle frizz or Kérastase Chroma Riche shampoo for holding color and adding shine. In most cases, I would recommend first using Kérastase Thermique as a leave-in conditioner in damp hair and adding a styling product, all of which should be prescribed by a stylist.
