Hi, I’m Marisa Falone Alvarez and I’ve been a part of the SalonCapri team for 7 years now. I am a senior stylist at our Newton Highlands location as well as a T.E.C.H artist and educator for Kérastase USA!
Where did you study previously?
I received a degree in Marketing at Bentley University before pursuing my lifelong dream of becoming a hair stylist. After graduating, I worked briefly at a few local salons before finding my true home at SalonCapri, where I studied under my amazing mentors, Gina Penna and Laura Penna Shaw.
What do you specialize in?
I love it all! If I had to choose a specialization, I would say coloring techniques and styling. I love a challenge, so have always enjoyed corrective color. As an artist, styling has given me a true outlet to create – anything from bombshell blowouts to seamless runway looks (as part of a team at Boston or New York Fashion Week!).
What inspired you to become a stylist?
Since I was little a little girl, I’ve always loved hair dressing. I remember the first time I learned how to create a braid on one of my dolls and I haven’t stopped since. I love creating beauty, working with my hands and, most importantly, making someone feel happy when they look in the mirror. Everyone deserves to have that feeling!
Which favorite hair care product has been in constant rotation for you behind the chair?
My favorite products are always changing depending on the time of year, but I have a few tried-and-true go-tos I can’t work without. My favorite heat protectant and blow dry cream is Kérastase’s Nectar Thermique. I love Shu Uemera’s Cotton Usu to polish dry ends and L’Oréal Professionnel’s Fresh Dust dry shampoo to extend the life of my blowout.
Which celeb haircut and/or color are you loving right now and why?
I am loving Jessica Alba’s new cut and color right now – It’s a great change from the long hair, but is still sexy and sophisticated.
What are your favorite hair colors or style trends right now?
My favorite hair colors right now are the new “bronde” (brunette/blonde) and “sombre” (subtle ombre) looks. It’s a great way to tone down light, washed-out summer hair color without losing dimension or a natural appearance. For cuts, I’m loving the textured and piecey lob!
What advice would you give a client who wants to try something new or different with their hair?
For someone looking to try something new, I would always suggest a consultation with your stylist. You want to make sure your new look is complimentary to your hair texture, skin tone and level of maintenance. You also want to make sure you have the time and patience to style it at home and that it works with your desired in-salon routine. It’s our job to set our clients up to win with their hair – Change is always fun, especially when it suits you!
What hair products should everyone have in their arsenal at home?
Professional shampoo and conditioner!!! Your hair is an accessory you wear every day and is worth the investment to maintain at home and it all starts with the products you use to treat and protect it. I love the entire Kérastase line for cleansing and moisturizing. There are several options depending on your hair’s needs, but right now I’m loving the new Kérastase Discipline Fluidisime line as it helps moisturize and fights frizz on all types of hair!
