Hi My Name is Paula Norberg and I’m a Senior Stylist at the SalonCapri Newton location! SalonCapri has a long and proud history and I’m happy to say that I’ve been a part of that tradition since 1982. I live in Roslindale with my children and my Australian Cattle Dog, Roz. I love living in the city – I wouldn’t have it any other way.
What are your credentials?
I attended Bojack Academy back in the day and, after graduation, was honored to mentor under two very amazing stylists, Gina Penna and Nick Penna Sr., the first generation owners of SalonCapri. I really love how SalonCapri keeps me engaged and inspired with continuing education, both in-salon and at the L’Oréal Professionnel SOHO Academies. I’m looking forward to attending some upcoming hands-on classes, one specializing in cutting curly hair and also a collections class at the L’Oréal Professionnel Academy in Laguna Beach ….California here I come!
What do you enjoy about your job?
I wake up excited to go to work every day….I love the energy of SalonCapri and the buzz. I love the people I meet every day, both old clients and new, and the people I work with and how tight-knit we are – we have so much fun! I really enjoy making people look and feel great and helping people see themselves in a whole new light. Being able to express myself creatively every day and have fun is living my dream. I love that moment with a client when we’ve chatted and then we both stop talking and I’m just “in the zone,” creating something I know that he or she will love.
What do you specialize in?
If I had to narrow it down, I really love corrective coloring, I love solving a puzzle and seeing the joy when I give a client what they want. Also, I know it sounds crazy but I really love working with fine hair – fine hair is my baby. There is nothing more satisfying than showing a client how to make the most of what they’ve got with the right cut, styling product or tool. My co-workers would tell you I’m the go-to for short cuts and they often refer clients to me for short cuts.
What inspired you to become a stylist?
I cannot remember a time in my life when I wasn’t obsessed with hair. My beautiful, stylish mother was definitely my inspiration. She was always on point with every latest trend, from the “Sassoon” to the “Beehive,” and some sexy long hippie styles. I remember trying to recreate those hairstyles on my Barbies and those life-sized mannequin heads they marketed to girls in the 70s. I soon graduated to doing my sister’s hair for dates and even did haircuts on my friends in my mom’s kitchen as a teenager! I was born to do hair! It’s my passion.
Any interesting/fun talents?
I really love to cook! Family holidays are always at my house and everyone is welcome! The more, the merrier! Tons of people, plenty of delicious food, cool music and fun! My family’s favorite meals of mine are my soups, stews and my award-winning chili! I’m also a swimmer…I was on a swim team as a kid and still return to swimming quite frequently when I need to decompress.
What is your #1 hair care or styling tip?
I’m a firm believer in conditioning treatments. They work! The Fusio Dose line of conditioning treatments by Kérastase is – hands down – the best! It’s totally customizable in 20 different combinations to meet your hair’s individual needs. For instance, if you have fine, frizzy hair, Fusio Dose has a combination to tame that frizz weightlessly, while plumping up those lifeless locks! Super dry and frizzy? There is a combination for that! Just super fine, like my hair? A double dose of Fusio Dose Densite is the cure.
Which favorite hair care product has been in constant rotation for you behind the chair to use on clients?
One of my favorite products to use on clients is Next Day Hair by L’Oréal Professionnel, which is the key to extending the life of your blowdry.
Also, I always make good use of the Kérastase Discipline line since it’s my go-to for shiny, lightweight, frizz control. My favorite in the line is the Fluidisissme Spray for weightless frizz control and I like the Kérastase Bouffant Mousse for body and hold.
Which celeb haircut and/or color are you loving right now and why?
I recently saw the movie “Bad Moms” and was totally obsessed with Mila Kunis’ long chocolate-y balayage. Just beautiful! On the other end of the spectrum is January Jones, the quintessential icy blonde. She is also the Kérastase spokesmodel but I would love her even if she wasn’t!
What are your favorite hair colors or style/cuts right now?
I’m really still in love with the short-to-long lob with plenty of texture. It’s very dramatic and never gets old for me. I’m also totally a sucker for a beautiful deep brunette shade.
What are some styles and colors that you’ve noticed are trending right now?
Texture rules this fall, whether it’s visual or tactile. Touchable waves or super straight…funky knots and ponytails. Dark roots with light ends are big this fall and so are versatile, wearable styles.
What hair products should everyone have in their arsenal at home?
People always ask me if shampoo and conditioner really makes that much of a difference and I have to say, “YES!” Personally, I have very fine hair that I color frequently – I switch it up from dark to light and back to dark again. I know which products will allow me to make these changes while keeping my hair in good condition and I use every product at my disposal. I take care of my own hair to make it look as shiny and as beautiful as possible. The hair products that I love and rotate at home on my own hair include Shu Uemura’s Muroto Volume Shampoo and Conditioner, Shu Uemura’s Cleansing Oil Shampoo and Conditioner and Kérastase’s Chronologiste, which is so luxurious. For clients, I usually customize an at-home regimen based on his or her hair type but the products that I use would be my recommendation for those with colored, fine hair.
