My name is Shaun O’Connor, I’m a North Shore native and a stylist at SalonCapri’s Newbury St. location, as well as an educator for SalonCapri’s Advanced Academy for hair pros.
How many years have you been a part of the SalonCapri team?
I’ve been on the SalonCapri team since around the time the Newbury Street location opened in 2013.
What do you specialize in?
My specialties include precision cuts and color. I really try to work with a client’s lifestyle – what they do and don’t do to their own hair, what they do for a living and their beauty budget – to provide them with an appropriate hairstyle they can maintain on a daily basis.
What inspired you to become a stylist?
My mother encouraged me to pursue becoming a stylist after high school, based on my interests in theatre and the arts. I took private art lessons for a long time. Being a stylist allows me to express my creativity, artistic ability and my love for fashion and style.
What is your #1 hair care or styling tip?
I recommend paddle brushing your hair and scalp on a daily basis, because it helps to exfoliate and circulate the blood. Plus, who doesn’t want to start the day off with a paddle brush massage?
You give an amazing men’s cut – what do you do to make it look so good?
Thank you! Women’s cuts are a lot softer. For men, I approach their haircut like an architecture project – I look at what needs to be done from a technical standpoint, then as a visual. It’s like detailing a car too!
Which favorite hair care product has been in constant rotation for you behind the chair?
Which celeb haircut and/or color are you loving right now and why?
I can’t get enough of Michelle Williams’ hair. I love its disconnected shapes…the cut is convertible and versatile.
What are your favorite hair colors, cuts or style trends?
I’m into blunt cuts with different types of bangs (i.e. short, textured, etc.) and I love any style with a 70s vibe. I also like a haircut that can grow out gracefully. In terms of color, I think a rope-colored blonde is really pretty and, even though hair painting is big right now, I think that there is something fresh about a solid color.
What hair products should everyone have in their arsenal at home?
For women, I recommend that all hair types use a thermal protection and, for men, Baxter’s Pomades.
What are some of your favorite places in Boston?
Delux Café in the South End is a good place to let your hair down. They have inexpensive, great food and the staff is amazing. I frequent Flour Bakery & Café for breakfast or lunch and I like Myers + Chang (owners Chris and Joanne are my clients) and Doretta Taverna and Raw Bar for dinner and drinks. For working out, I like David Barton Gym and I love to visit the Museum of Fine Arts.
