SHORT & SWEET: Blunt Bobs

A new year is the perfect time for a change and an opportunity to embrace a different look. We caught up with our team of stylists to chat about all things 2018. Among the trend forecasts from the experts? Brighter and bolder hair that’s reflective of women taking style risks and stepping out of their comfort zones to get that head-turning ‘wow’ look and feeling. “Right now, we are seeing so many blunt bobs and I think it will continue well into the year. I love this style because it gives you the option to wear your hair straight or in messy, loose waves a la Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez.”

“We’re going to be seeing a lot of edgy bobs this year. In 2017, it was all about the lob and 2018 is the time for the full bob, in either textured or super straight lines. Both celebrities (Mila Kunis, Jenna Dewan Tatum and so many others) and clients alike are getting brave about going for a bigger, bolder chop.”

“In my opinion, 2018 is going to be the year for stretching the boundaries. We’ve seen this past year spotlight celebs like Kim Kardashian, who took her hair from black to platinum in the blink of an eye. I predict a lot more of these daring transitions from long hairstyles to short, edgy cuts! As a hairstylist, I’m eager to encourage people to be bold and go for that statement look. And once New York Fashion Week hits, we’ll be able to see what fashion trends coincide with the ‘now’ and ‘in’ hairstyles. Bring on 2018!”

“Three words – blonde, blunt, bob. Olivia Holt’s current style with textured waves is what I think everyone’s go-to will be in the new year.”

ICE, ICE BABY: Cool Blondes

Taylor Portanova, Legacy Place

“I think icy blondes will be very popular in 2018, especially in this winter season. Au naturel, ‘lived in’ textured cuts are the perfect complement to this cool color.”

“I definitely think cool blonde hues will be in for 2018. Celebrities like Selena Gomez and Kim Kardashian that have naturally dark hair are transitioning to beautiful cooler blonde shades. I think clients are seeing this, and it’s giving them that confidence they need to make a big change with their hair in the new year.”

“For 2018, I think blondes will definitely keep leaning towards the cooler tones with lots of babylights for a brighter and lighter look. Balayage and textured layers are not going anywhere! I’m really loving the trend towards face-framing and contouring we’re seeing as the new year starts – it really brightens up your face while still keeping a more natural brunette look.”

TEXTURE MATERIAL: Movement & Waves

Brittany DeForge, Newton Highlands

“I think women are going to be stepping out of their comfort zones and we’ll be seeing a shift into looks that speak louder and resemble their freedom of expression. And a 90s vibe is still very present; for cuts, I see long layered hair with a lot of texture and wave being coveted. Think of it as a 90s grunge look, but softer! Hailey Baldwin and Ashley Tisdale are showing it off lately.”

“I think people are going to go with more blunt cuts with a lot of texture and movement. I don’t think the Victoria’s Secret soft curls will ever go away, but we’ll definitely start to see more and more “rough” and gritty textures with a lot of dimension in color. It will be a “clean messy” look full of lived-in style and texture. Emily Ratajkowski is a perfect example of this – it doesn’t matter if she wears her hair short or long, it’s always a blunt base with edgy texture. Her hair is polished and styled without finesse.

“I think we are going to start seeing smoother hair and a lot of sleek styles. It’s already happening with the likes of Kim Kardashian and Demi Lovato. I actually created a ‘ripple wave’ technique that I’m really into right now – it’s smooth with a slight fluid surface wave for texture and movement.”

Britt Walter, Newbury Street and Legacy Place

“My prediction for 2018 is texture, texture and more texture. Whether it be on the longer side or in shorter cuts, I think we’ll be seeing a lot of the ‘lived in’ look (both in style and color) that embraces the various movements and dimensions of a cut.”

THE DARK SIDE: Warm Shades

Caitlin Young, Newbury Street and Newton Highlands

“I’m really noticing that my clients are starting to go darker and warmer with their colors lately. When it comes to cuts, I think sleeker styles and long bobs are still in and will be for awhile. I love seeing that clients and celebrities with long locks are finally eager to embrace ‘the new’ and make that chop!”

FRINGE BENEFITS: Curtain Bangs

Cameron Ryan, Newbury Street

“I think that ‘barely there’ waves and enviable fringe will be everywhere this year. Alexa Chung, the new face of L’Oréal Professionel and Kérastase, is a perfect example of the style of bangs that are popular currently.”
