Winter was all about bobs, and this spring was all about the perfect pixie, so what are our strands in for this summer? Ladies, it’s time to let your hair down and get it growing because this season is all about unbelievably long mermaid manes! We’ve seen long silky strands popping everywhere from musical sensation Iggy Azalea and reality star Kendall Jenner, to the runway shows of the world’s top designers. We asked our very own Nicholas Penna Jr. to share his top tips, products, and industry secrets to mastering a miraculous mermaid mane! Read on to get growing!
Reduce Your Routine and Pick the Perfect Brush
You know the drill: wash, rinse, repeat. However, cleansing hair too often can strip away the natural oils that keep it healthy, thus making hair more brittle and prone to breaking. Nick suggests reducing the number of times you shampoo your hair to 3-4 times a week. In between shampoos, soak up oil with a light coat of dry shampoo on your roots and use a boar bristle brush (Nick recommends a boar hair brush like a Mason Pearson brush) to distribute hair oils from root to tip for extra natural shine and conditioning.
Swap out Silicone Shampoos
We’ve all heard the golden rule of getting a salon trim every six weeks to keep your hair healthy, but it isn’t always that easy! Silicone-based shampoos can make your hair ultra-shiny, but they can also prevent vital oils from accessing your strands. To boost your hairs natural conditioning abilities, Nick suggests opting for a silicone-free shampoo such as Kérastase’s Bain Crystal line. It purifies roots, rebalances hair fibers, and leaves ends smooth and polished (sans trim!).
Ditch Your Dryer
To achieve ultra-long locks, you’ll need strong and healthy hair. Consistent use of heated tools can damage your mane and cause breakage, so avoid using dryers or irons as much as possible. If you’re not ready to part from your tools, Nick suggests using Shu Uemura Art Of Hair Fiber Lift to protect your strands from heat, humidity, and UV rays while also keeping hair full and soft. Have some current breakage and split ends that need mending? Nick’s secret weapon in the salon is Kérastase Resistance Fibre Architecte serum – it actually repairs and seals split ends on even the most damaged hair!
Grow Hair From the Inside Out!
Making an effort to feel good will also help you look good! Eating nutrient-packed meals, staying hydrated and minimizing stress are all key for overall hair health and growth! Get glowing and get growing!
Are you dying for long hair, but can’t bear to wait for your locks to grow? If so, hair extensions are always an option. Nick loves Great Lengths hair extensions for their high quality and because they cause the least amount of damage to natural hair while having a life of three to four months. If considering extensions, Nick recommends going into the salon for a consultation with a stylist who can match the color and texture of the extensions to your natural hair.
